ICASビデオ:Extended deterrence in Northeast Asia

Public lecture video by Institute of Contemporary Asian Studies (ICAS). This lecture was held on November 30, 2015. Speaker was Valerie Niquet, Head of the Asia Department at Fondation pour la recherche stratégique (the Foundation for Strategic Research) in Paris.

Event Description

On September 3 the PRC, for the first time in its history, organized a huge military parade to celebrate the 70th anniversary of “the Chinese people’s victory in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. Missiles, from short to long-range, were prominently on display. This event further demonstrated the tense situation in the Asia-Pacific and particularly in Northeast Asia where doubts have been expressed about the reliability of the US extended deterrence guarantees in a situation where threats and threat perceptions are far more blurred than during the cold war.

Valerie Niquet will offer a few reflexions on extended deterrence, from a French perspective, in Northeast Asia and possible scenarios for a region which is today at the forefront of nuclear proliferation.
